On 1 March, a shell damaged a boarding school for blind children. As of 4 March, 122 civilians—including five children—had been killed in the Kharkiv region, according to the Kharkiv Regional Police. Out of an initial population of 1.8 million, only 500,000 people remained in Kharkiv by 7 March. On 8 March, Russian forces bombed a hospital in Izium, totally destroying it. On 18 March, the number of civilians killed in Kharkiv surpassed 450, as a result of the use of cluster munitions and explosive weapons in heavily populated areas of the city.
