While the Kremlin is cynically euphemizing its imperial ambitions with statements about “protecting the Orthodox faith,” the aggressive attack of the Russian military has ruined Orthodox temples and other spiritual sites. Since the beginning of Russia’s war against Ukraine, at least 59 spiritual sites have been badly affected in at least eight regions; most of these are Orthodox churches. Damage was also inflicted on mosques, synagogues, Protestant churches, religious education institutions, and important administrative buildings of religious organizations.
