Russian troops leave behind a trail of dead civilians, flattened apartment blocks, and V signs in Ukraine’s cities. Putin’s Russia reminds us of Stalin’s big terror in its oppressive treatment of its own citizens and in the Red Army war crimes toward the Ukrainians. The reason for this is Russia’s inability to deal with its troubled collective past and its attempt to drag Ukraine back into the 20th century.
